Most slings are safe - when worn correctly!! The type of sling shown in this post, honestly, is a bit of a joke among babywearing aficionados. The baby shouldn’t be worn like a purse or a messenger bag banging against your hip. This site has an excellent explanation as to the dangers: http://babyslingsafety.blogspot.com.
Ring slings, pouches, wraps, mei tais, and buckle carriers are all safe options - when worn properly. While there are ways to safely cradle carry a newborn, I advise people to use the upright tummy to tummy position as it is much easier to get right. Most babies prefer this position anyway and it can be done in any carrier, even a ring sling.
If you are interested in babywearing, you may want to see if there is a babywearing group in your area or a store that sells good carriers that can assist you with proper positioning. Most babywearers LOVE talking about babywearing and would love to help you. Sadly, most carriers that you can purchase at big box stores (like B@bies R’Us, T@rget, Wal-M@rt, etc.) are either not great for long term wearing (like the Baby Bjorn) or are down right dangerous (like the Slingrider).
Personally, I hate slings (like pouches) because I find them uncomfortable. The weight is all on one shoulder and there just isn't enough support. I highly recommend a woven wrap or a beco.
